At 5p today Bloomington time, I will be joining others around the country/world in marching on Capitol Hill. I’ll do this by opening up my laptop and launching the Second Life client and letting Old McDunnough, my avatar, do the legwork for me. There are many blogs about this event, and some press is expected to show and cover the protest. The virtual march is the end of a weekend of activities by RootsCampSL.
I have plenty of concerns that the news to report will be about the technical inadequacy of the site instead of the political use of virtual space. I also had to download yet another upgrade upon logging in this morning. If you plan to participate today, you might want to get that out of the way this morning … and then anticipate some lag in response time or functionality at 5p.
BTW, Roy Mark (Internet News) had a nice journal entry on the launch of Virtual Capitol Hill in early January. It gives more background on both the motivation behind the project and the joys of experiencing SL for the first time.
