Of course, moments after I post about organizing a Second Life marathon run, I get brought back to earth by the big elephant in the room: Second Life is down.
As great as SL appears to be for things like machinima and interactive community building, the technical monster is rearing its head. Critics say much of this stems from poor design, or at best a failure to anticipate end usage of the medium. As Steven Davis, CEO of security solutions-provider SecurePlay, told blogger Tony Walsh:
“They did not consider ownership of assets, creation and duplication of assets as the central function of Second Life, but rather decoration on top of the landscape. This essential error causes most of the security problems that we see as well as many of the other issues people have with Second Life.”
Now, the current problem is a product of a prolonged software upgrade. According to the status blog: “The update to version 1.13 from 7am is taking longer than expected. We are hammering away and will get it up as soon as we can.” For all I know (as a very new resident), 7a-Noon Pacific is the low-usage time for Second Life. Seems like normal business hours, though, and inherently inconvenient. On e-paper, it shouldn’t have cost me my weekly RootsCamp meeting … but it did.

One week later, my SL meeting is possible. However, I have to download a new update (didn’t I just do that?). I also see some recent posts in their official blog highlight talking about how to find places when Search is down.
I think I’m going to use this comment thread as a running log about connectivity and performance successes and failures around this weekly RootsCamp SL meeting.
Another update this week. There are some louder whistles and faster bells, but it annoys me that there are so many of the damn things. I only come on once a week, for this meeting.
