Archie's Antics Conversations with Carter Mama Journal Parenting

Merrily we roll along.

Sometimes I think I’m in a Sondheim musical.

Carter and Archie have decided to turn off the TV and wrestle. Archie comes running to me.

Archie: Help me take off my shirt. I have to take off my shirt because we are wrestling.

Me: You have to take off your shirt to wrestle?

Carter: Here’s the trick. Do you have two dollars?

Archie: Yes. I have to take off my shirt to wrestle with Carter. Carter said so.

Carter: I’ll pay you two dollars, or you pay me two dollars if I can say the number you’re thinking of.

Me: Wha?

Archie: Take off my shirt!! Carter said so!!

Carter: Two dollars, if I can’t say the number you’re thinking of

Archie: Pants on or off?

Carter: Think of a number.

Archie: ON OR OFF PANTS ON OR OFF

Me: I don’t have two dollars.

Carter: it’s okay, you just have to believe that I can’t say the number you’re thinking of.

Archie: PANTS OFF

Carter: see, but I can still say “The number you’re thinking of!” Get it? Get it?

Archie: PANTS ON OR OFF CARTER?

Carter: On. Let’s go wrestle.

They run off to the bedroom and I am left alone to sing some sort of sad ballad.

That was one of our riddles from this morning, adapted from a story about guessing someone’s weight. Something got lost in translation. The wrestling bit is new.

It’s a lovely song you are singing.
