The Hoosier Hundred

A few moments ago, John Meylor became our 100th person to register for Bloomington Startup Weekend, achieving our final recruiting milestone. Future founders will gather in City Hall in Bloomington, Indiana on Friday to start pitching ideas for a new company.

I’m exhausted and stressed—a feeling that won’t go away until everybody gets paid using the $3000 in sponsor donations—but also elated that things have progressed this far. Tomorrow, I will be sleeping the sleep of someone who hasn’t slept much but needs to. But tonight, I take a moment to bask in the glow of community.

One hundred is on the high end of reasonable group dynamics. Andrew Hyde, the founder of the original Startup Weekend in Boulder last July, believes 85 might be the ideal number. If so, that puts our group a little at risk. I am hopeful that diversity and Hoosier pride will help us work through the inevitable bumpy spots and stick together. It is typical for 10% attrition to happen as Friday becomes Saturday becomes Sunday. Now that the recruiting goals are achieved, I have a big one for the founders: Zero attrition. 100 full-share founders.

Although our registration for this weekend’s event is sold out, it isn’t too late to become a fan of the process. We will be publishing updates here on the official Startup Weekend blog. We will also try a timely implementation of the new Prologue theme for WordPress, providing a more detailed stream of activity. There is also streaming images from City Hall, a Meebo Room, and a strong local Twitter community to leverage, giving those who could not attend several ways to pay attention to what we do.

Even though registration is now closed, Bloomington Startup—the local organizing entity for the Startup Weekend event on Friday— will continue to take names on a fan list. Signing up with a valid email address will give you daily summaries of our three days of decisions and blogging. We can also notify you of any future events in the region (including a June Startup Weekend in Ann Arbor, Michigan).

Napping now. Dreaming of cutting checks and making mockups.
