The Alter Alter Ego

One of Eric’s emotions reminded me of Evil Spock, overworked local blogger from the alternate universe. Evil leveraged a wry wit, a close circle of blogger friends, and a good schtick to create—rather quickly—a healthy following. I can admire people like Eric and Evil Spock because I know how difficult it is to keep the pace, particularly when your thing involves being funny. Constantly.

It had been a while since I did a pass through some of the sites we had posted on our community page (almost as long as the last time we updated the blogroll), so I clicked to check out if Eric had conveyed any new emotions recently. While I’m not sure how frequently the site is updated, this one did strike a chord:

Eric conveys an emotion

It reminded me of Evil Spock, overworked local blogger from the alternate universe. Evil leveraged a wry wit, a close circle of blogger friends, and a good schtick to create—rather quickly—a healthy following. It doesn’t hurt his authority ranking that some of his 68 incoming links in the past half year come from sites with heftier throngs, such as Spocko’s Brain (374), Indie Bloggers (208) and PSoTD (201).

Evil seems to be feeling the pressures of social burnout—meaning work and the rest of life cut into his blogging time—and is reaching out to some friends to convert The Needs of the Few into a multi-authored effort. I’m not sure if there is a slow season in social work, but I believe the world is nearing the one-year anniversary of the blog’s launch in August, so maybe there is an energy peak coming. As his reigning Superfan (take that, Dr. Stephanie!), I hope the Vulcan finds that balance between obsession and not being single to see Year Two.

It is difficult to maintain productivity. I use our blog as an outlet for research, mainly. This is great when the hard drive crashes because my work is still largely unaffected. However, the sacrifice is that I have much less energy to devote to writing about my boys, which used to be my main focus for blogging before I knew what blogging was. Amy more than takes up that slack with her Conversations with Carter and Mama Journals, but with her there is an ebb and flow dictated by time on the computer. While a higher authority ranking would be great, the value of blogging is in documentation and improving skills. Amy and I are probably better writers, researchers and observers than if we had never heard of WordPress.

I can admire people like Eric and Evil Spock because I know how difficult it is to keep the pace, particularly when your thing involves being funny. Constantly.

Ah, you honor me with this blog entry!

My Authority is down to 67. Blah! I noticed that I’ve rubbed some in the interweb the wrong way, and they dumped my blog. Of course, I did the same with them. I would like my character to become a polarizing figure before the 2008 election.

Oh, and in my quest to take as much credit with doing the least work possible, I was wondering if you would like to become an official Author of Evil and blog mostly about pop culture tech stuff. I could hand over the fembot/mandroid and insect/rodent weapons division to you! The commitment is one blog every 8 weeks.

Drop me an email or something if you’re interested.
