A few days back, Amy passed along an episode of Mr. Deity, a semi-monthly video comedy series about God. The show stars creator Brian Keith Dalton in the title role and Jimbo Marshall as his assistant / Holy Spirit, Larry. Later episodes also feature Jesus, er, Jesse (Sean Douglas) and Lucifer, er, Lucy (Amy Rohren).

Mr. Deity

In the FAQ, Brian writes about the religious nature of the show:

I am a formerly religious person (non-bitter), and as such, have great sympathies for the beliefs and feelings of religious people. I love the fact that they are concerned with the big issues like Good and Evil, Existence, Creation, etc… I don’t always agree with the answers they provide to these questions, but I deeply respect their concern. Our goal here is not to mock religion, but to use it as a foundation for the humor. I’m thrilled that so many religious people have written to tell me that they love the episodes. In future episodes, I intend to turn the tables a bit and poke fun at what I call the “angry atheists” (of whom I am not fond). We’ll see if they take it so well.

Brian claims he has only received one piece of hate mail about the show’s themes. Pastors apparently use the show in their churches to prompt discussions.

There is a nice little cult following developing for the show. In addition to a fan blog, Mr. Deity has an interesting interview with the Humanist Network News Podcast. It is essentially a best-of for the series to date. Brian—who also has a feature film project, 15 Minutes Later (an expansion of a 2003 mockumentary “Killing The Dream”)—hopes to spin the comedy sketch shorts into a half-hour television series.

The Season One finale will be released on Saturday, October 6th, paving the way for a second season premiering on Crackle on October 17th.

By Kevin Makice

A Ph.D student in informatics at Indiana University, Kevin is rich in spirit. He wrestles and reads with his kids, does a hilarious Christian Slater imitation and lights up his wife's days. He thinks deeply about many things, including but not limited to basketball, politics, microblogging, parenting, online communities, complex systems and design theory. He didn't, however, think up this profile.

Hey-

Have you heard of these Mr. Deity videos? They’re circling around and are completely irreverent.

I found out that Season Two is starting next week, check out this promo:

If you’ve got time, a full episode airs right after, it’s hilarious.

I wonder what Bush and his lackies will say about this?!?
