Former Xavier University graduate and Graphic Services Coordinator Cheryl Dejoie-LaCabe made a big change a few years ago, leaving her home town of New Orleans, Louisiana, to attend school at Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia. This month marks the final stage of that journey as her thesis exhibition runs for the final two weeks of July.
Cheryl completes the M.F.A. graphic design degree work with a thesis exhibition at Hamilton Hall Gallery in Savannah, Georgia.
The show — “Surface: A Magazine for Artist, by Artist” — runs from July 19 until August 1. “Surface” is a magazine created by artists and for artists. Cheryl plans to make it a business venture after graduation.
The gallery will be shared by another Bayou native, Debra Ann Woodfork, who will add her graduate work (“Visions Through Art”) to the halls and walls of the gallery. The official reception will be on July 21 from 5:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. EASTERN. Admittance to SCAD galleries is free and open to the public.
Hamilton Hall, once a secondary power station and warehouse, now houses the college’s video/film department. The most striking aspect of the building is its video wall, comprised of 72 individual television monitors. The monitors display work by students, faculty and professional artists. The lobby of Hamilton Hall often features exhibitions of student painting or photography.
The Master of Fine Arts is a two-year program. All M.F.A. students are required to take two internships and complete a thesis project as part of their course of study. The thesis project provides the final assessment of the student’s educational program. It is meant to be resolved, cohesive, and represent a major direction or development in the student’s work.
