So the president of Harvard gave this talk about women and math and innate differences in sex making boys better at math. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills. Seriously? The president of what?
Seriously?
Since there are studies indicating that we treat infant boys and girls quite differently, while the brain is still developing, I’m pretty sure we’re going to have to table the nature/nurture debate on math skills for now.
But the thing that is stuck in my craw (the president of Harvard? Seriously?) is the second argument for the difference between men and women- the 80 hour work week. And the woman responding has the great come back of “I like an 80 hour work week.”
Here’s the world where I want to live: “Gee, an 80 hour work week? Doesn’t that person have a life? Do you think that indicates some sort of mental disorder that he or she would abandon normal socialization in order to do math problems for 80 hours a week?”
Calgon, take me away, to a world in which commitment to family and relationships is valued.
