Digging Up Bones

On the way home from a playdate, Carter asks Kevin,

“Dad, can we please go dig in the ground until we find a body?”

Kevin: “Why?”

Carter: “Because I really really want to hold a bone, a human bone.”

Kevin spends some time talking about calling various biology departments to see if Carter could see a human bone, but each time the response from Carter is,

“I want to HOLD the bone. The real human bone. I want to touch it and keep it. I don’t want to just see it.”

Kevin explains that generally, in our society, we don’t get to touch dead human parts. Carter thinks for a few minutes, then,

“Daddy, when you die, can I have your bones?”

“Sure, Carter. What bones do you want?”

“The head bone! I want to keep the head bone!”

Kevin agreed to make some arrangements.
